If you are planning a trip to visit Grand Cayman Island, you may want to consider staying on one of its sister islands. Grand Cayman’s sister islands, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, are located about 90 miles northeast of Grand Cayman. These islands are not as commercial as Grand Cayman and offer a slower pace where visitors can relax and enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings without all of the commercial trappings that appeal to some tourists who visit Grand Cayman.
Little Cayman is only a mile wide and 10 miles long but it offers breathtaking beaches, mangrove forests, orchid-filled tropical forests and salt ponds to explore and enjoy. It is the smallest of the Cayman Islands and was first settled by turtle fishermen in the 1600s. Today, about 150 permanent inhabitants live on the island. You can fly directly to Little Cayman from Grand Cayman and then getting around from there is quiet easy – – there is only one main road that circles the Island. Be sure to have cash or credit cards as there is only one bank, no ATMs and the bank is only open on Mondays and Thursdays. While there you can go snorkeling, diving or kayaking; however, the main attraction on this little island is the opportunity to slow down, relax and enjoy the natural, unspoiled beauty of this Caribbean island.
Cayman Brac is just over a mile wide and 12 miles long. It is the most easterly of the Cayman Islands and was settled by Scottish fisherman who named the island after the limestone ridge along the center of the island to a 140ft bluff at the other end of the island. There are approximately 1,500 permanent residents on the island. There is also one bank located on Cayman Brac just as with Little Cayman; however, the bank does have an ATM on the island. There are many things to do on the island including hiking, exploring the caves, rock climbing and diving. You can also take a guided tour of the island and visit the Heritage House, a historic home that was once a tannery that now hosts a variety of cultural events.
